ARJIS Regional Crime Statistics System

The FBI has mandated a change to the rape definition for the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. Additional information regarding the broadened definition of rape can be found at https://ucr.fbi.gov. The new definition of rape has been broadened to include male victims, sodomy, penetration with any body part or objects, and no longer requires force. The newly revised definition is as follows: Penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. California law enforcement agencies were required by the California Department of Justice to begin reporting based on the new definition by January 1, 2015. Effective this date, totals for rape, aggravated assaults, violent crime totals, and the crime index totals are impacted. Crime statistics in these categories should not be compared to previous years.

This crime statistics application provides citizens with timely information about crimes by geographic area (for example; beat, neighborhood, etc.). For the official statistics reported to the FBI by local agencies, please visit the SANDAG website at www.sandag.org/cj or contact the police agency directly.
The default view displays the crime statistics for the previous month by police agency (one column per agency).
A negative value indicates a change in a previously reported crime.
Data is generally updated on the 28th of each month with crime statistics from the previous month. (For example, crime statistics for January are loaded on February 28.) The City of San Diego updates their crime statistics only when their data has been validated, usually after the 28th of the month. Regional crime statistics are impacted until all the cities’ totals are added.
The system will display crimes for the past two years.
You can customize your query parameters:
- Begin and End Dates - both are required.
- Leave ‘All Agencies’ or optionally select an Agency from a dropdown list of ARJIS agencies. Only one Agency can be selected at a time.
- If an agency is selected, optionally select a GeoArea Type from a dropdown listing of area types specific to each agency. Examples include beat, sector, command area or other geographic area used by an agency. Only one GeoArea Type can be selected at a time.
- If a GeoArea Type has been selected, optionally select a Specific Area from a drop-down list of named areas. This option allows for a more flexible filter and is specific to each agency, depending on which GeoArea is selected. Only one Specific Area can be selected at a time.
- When all selections are made, press the ‘Submit’ button to display the results in the grid to the right. Optionally, the information may be printed to PDF or exported to an Excel spreadsheet. Press the ‘New Search’ button at any time to start a new query.

If only a Date Range is specified, a county-wide summary of crimes for the given period is reported.
Selecting a specific Agency will create a monthly report of crimes for the selected period for that agency.
Tabs labeled ‘Violent Crimes’ and ‘Property Crimes’ display graphs of these crime categories.
Explanation of Totals:
- Total Violent Crime equals the sum of murders, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults.
- Total Burglary equals the sum of residential and non-residential burglaries.
- Total Thefts equals the sum of thefts >= $400 and thefts < $400.
- Total Property Crime equals the sum of Total Burglary, Total Thefts, and motor vehicle thefts.
- Crime Index Total equals the sum of Total Violent Crime and Total Property Crime.

These statistics represent Part I crimes, also known as Index Crimes, as defined by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. Agencies throughout the country participate in the UCR Program, which results in data compiled at agency, regional and national levels. Part I crimes include Criminal Homicide, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Burglary, Larceny and Motor Vehicle Theft. Note these figures represent only the highest level (most serious) crime committed per incident. For example, if someone is assaulted during the commission of a Robbery, only the Robbery would count for that incident. A note regarding the interpretation of crime data: The FBI cautions the users of crime statistics to be aware that there are many variables involved in crime data. Using these data to rank cities or neighborhoods can lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that can create misleading perceptions. According to the FBI: “To assess criminality and law enforcement’s response from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, one must consider many variables, some of which, while having significant impact on crime, are not readily measurable or applicable pervasively among all locales.”
